Freedom Friday – ggwp

gl, hf.

It’s easy to start out the day with a positive attitude. Wait, did I say easy? Apologies, I meant possible. It’s possible to start out the day with a positive attitude. The same is true for a game of Dota 2, the video game I play on a daily basis with close friends. Before the game starts, it’s easy to drop a quick “gl, hf” in the chat for everyone to see (Unless you’re Fergz and you’re tilted by the draft already 😉 ). Good luck, have fun. Positivity.

As the game wears on, things are going to happen. You might accidentally feed first blood. That’s a Meister special. Or, you might forget to place your ward and your carry gets killed. That’s the Meister classic. Small problems may intrude on your positive game. Missed last hits. Enemy harass damage. Teammates losing lanes, if you’re Ginz. None of these things matter unless your ancient is killed. You can still win. There is always opportunity to come back, even if it’s highly unlikely. Small mistakes may not mean anything in 15 minutes. Ginz Invoker has come online and is about to carve up a teamfight. Pharmacist is already at 100cs, despite his poor support. The game continues, anything could happen.

The same is true with the day.

Small problems creep into the day, just like the Dota game. A wrong phrase was said. A test doesn’t go so well. Someone didn’t reply a text. A girl you’ve had a crush on for a long ass time spends another day looking and being effortlessly incredible. Things take a small bite out of your happiness. It’s the chip damage strat. But, it’s not hopeless. You can still come back. The day can still be won. Gwei Lo is just about to bust out a Lanter snap that’ll make you smile. Fergz might fire up Dota again. Ridehunter is streaming. Eupe sends you a good song.  The day wears on, and your opportunity isn’t lost, there is still time to make a comeback.

Another, many tentacled thought creeps into your mind. Suddenly, the positives are hard to find. The gl hf of earlier is forgotten. I’ll never be as good as Ukko. Not in Dota, in life. Now these problems seem to matter a great deal. The game is barely into the 20th minute but still the small problems nip and tear at you. After every one of them, a thought pokes and prods at your well being. End. I’m done with this game. Gank unsuccessful. End. Rune spawns top. End. Miss-micro courier. End.

Today is a day of small mistakes.

End.
